Hand Held Camera – Oulton Park 1967

Gary Critcher

I’ve just come across this picture on one of my Facebook motor racing pages.

I would think this would be a ‘live’ piece into Grandstand, but what’s the camera?? It’s very small.

Brian Summers’ excellent Museum of the Broadcast Television Camera website indicates that the camera was a 1962 vintage LEP CHF-503 1 inch vidicon monochrome radio camera which was widely used by BBC OBs. Brian’s website has another interesting picture showing BBC cameraman Selwyn Cox holding the camera and talking to motor racing personality John Bolster with his trademark Deerstalker hat.

This was a bit before my time as my involvement with cameras in P&ID began with the Type 2 CMCRs in 1968. In the early 70s, BBC colour radio camera facilities were provided by the purchase of two Norelco/Pye TVT PCP90 Minicams.
