I remember watching colour tests in the 1950s from AP – these were in NTSC 405 lines. The feature film ‘She wore a yellow ribbon’ was a favourite being shown regularly as well as a series of still photos which had obviously been selected to show colour in its all its glory!
I listened to the recording sent by Rob Miles and the audio about a test transmission is from the end section of ‘This is the BBC’ film first transmitted about 1960. When I joined the BBC in 1963, I asked how the pictures on the colour monitors were done and was told that they were matted in!
