BBC Cafeterias

I recently came across this slice of history of menu and prices from BBC TVC cafeteria: circa 1965.

We got Luncheon Vouchers at TVC in the 1960s.  It was a Luncheon Voucher if you had more than 5 meals in a  week. It worked out very well for those on AP shifts in BH SWC,  as of course it was one short/one long week.

One was allowed 3/6d for the second meal of the day. (with long studio days at TVC etc, that was most of the time).

If you took it in cash, all the 3/6 was taxed, but a 3/- LV meant that only the 6d was taxed!

The evening meal (or Supper) (or second meal of the day) menu was considerably less extensive: I recall that most of my evening meals were pork pie, chips and beans, with yoghourt to follow.  And then we are expected to go on live transmission!  What a lot of us did was to take a handful of sugar cubes – these were available on the tables at TVC – and suck these before a show.

Going to the canteen at Lime Grove was unpleasant on wet and/or windy days, as you had to cross an exposed (now wild, wet and slippery) iron bridge affair from the studio block to the canteen.  Grimace as the Metropolitan (Hammersmith and City) stock ozoned and groaned their way along the track alongside.
