From Richard Bellfontaine
Richard has sent me about a dozen copies of Ariel (BBC in-house magazine, for visitors), from 1955-57.
Apart from the size and the paper, it doesn’t seem to have really changed that much since then. Articles and obits etc – though people being referred to by just their surname in places dates it, as does the odd girl in a swimsuit, very non pc now.
Oh – and the small ads…
This was the standard cover. Presumably the figure is Ariel, and one wonders if CWB, the artist, wasn’t having a bit of an in joke for the boys in pink in those innocent times…heaven forbid!
Here’s a veritable miscellany of material –
Caption speaks for itself, sort of…
An article about floor managers – but who are the people?
Is that a young Ian Gibb on the left?
Television Centre in 1957. The scenery/design block is complete, and the canteen. In the middle section, the concrete base of the TC1 basement is laid, and bits of what became VT area 1, but not much else. I wonder how long before it all gets back down to this?
Meanwhile, you could sample the delights of the Riverside canteen…
..in between stints in Studio 2
Or work at the King’s Theatre whilst TVT was being refurbished
