Could be a great use for all the batteries the sound department discard from the RF mics!

You could always use re-chargeables!

Clean Up Battery Mess

Dave Mundy

Does anyone know what is the white stuff that comes out of spent batteries these days? Years ago it seemed to rot the contacts but now it seems you can just scrape it off with no harm done.

Keith Wicks

What sort of batteries/cells? Ni-Cds, perhaps?

Dave Mundy

Just the normal Duracell or Panasonic, not rechargeable.

Keith Wicks

The white stuff was almost certainly caused by caustic potassium hydroxide leaking from alkaline cells. Some potassium carbonate may be present too. The best way to clean up any mess is to use a dilute acid, such as vinegar or lemon juice, which will neutralise the alkali.

John Henshall

Removing ‘white stuff’ – sounds a bit suspicious! I’ve removed the verdigris from my dad’s cheap old Aiwa mic using a mixture of white vinegar and salt. It came off immediately.
