Julian Tolkien

Philip Tyler

It is with the greatest sadness that I have to inform the group that Julian has passed away. Tony Philpot informed me and I have no further details at the moment.

So sorry to hear this Julian was so kind to me when I was at the Beeb I took the micki out of him as he had such a cherubic face To me, he was always of a jolly temperament never seemed to be frustrated or angry except when Anne in allocations cottoned on the some system of making the most of it Cannot remember how ? Maybe someone else remembers But she sussed him out apparently and he wasn’t so happy with that outcome. I will always remember him with a great deal of affection.

LIke Sara, I found Julian the most affable of characters. As an oik from the regions who had poached a London job, I was prepared for some hostility when I moved to TVC from Bristol, but like all the other members of sound department, Julian made me most welcome and was exceedingly helpful in situations which I had not previously encountered in the region. And a great raconteur, to boot!

Steve Rogers

I was fairly new and sitting in the gallery of TVT reading The Hobbit when a guy walked past stopped and asked if I was enjoying the book I later found out it was Julian a lovely guy condolences to his family.

I was for some time SA2 on Julian’s crew with Phil Tyler as SAG. They were happy times and many stories of Julian come to mind. He and Stuart Morris had a love hate relationship and LE shows with Stuart were always “entertaining”.

On one occasion Julian was positioning a mic for Shirley Bassey but the mark was unclear and it was in the wrong position. Julian wandered into shot to move the mic and Stuart started shouting down talkback “get Julian out of shot and give him a wheelchair ********”.

However on one show Julian was on leave and a standby SA1 took his place, Stuart said to me ” I hope Julian is back next week” .

Never a dull moment it was a great privilege to work with Julian and it is with sadness I hear of his passing.

Ted Kent

I can’t remember exactly when I came across Julian, but I think it was not long after I came back from Evesham and decided to go with sound rather than cameras. Julian was very patient with me and taught me a lot. It was a great atmosphere in the sound department of the crew and he was very protective of me when I made mistakes whilst guiding me for the future. As I left the BBC in 1969, my memories are fading but Julian and his kindness and good nature is one person I remember with great admiration.

David Plaice

Just to concur with previous comments, my Sound training attachment was with Julian on Crew 7 in 1985 and he was very welcoming and friendly, and willing to give you his time. And the Tolkien connection made it all the more special for this former member of the Tolkien Appreciation Society.
