Super Emitrons

Dave Buckley

The attached pix appeared in the Daily Mail last Monday showing an early TV camera at a Charlton Athletic football match in 1947. Anyone recognise the version?

Simon Vaughan

The picture from the Daily Mail is of a Super Emitron, which was 10-15 times more sensitive than the standard Emitron tubes. It was first introduced to the Outside Broadcast unit and put into programme service on 11th November 1937, during the first OB of Armistice Day, and depicted King George VI laying a wreath at the Cenotaph.

Each Super Emitron, like the standard Emitron was hand blown, but unlike the standard version, appears to have cases of differing shapes.

Alan Taylor

More pics of Super Emitron cameras on OBs, pre and post war, showing the camera a little more clearly.
