Forsyte Saga April 1967

Pictures and notes by Mike Minchin

Caroline Blakistone. Actor. “Marjorie Farrar”

Susan Hampshire and 3 Extras (or as they prefer, Supporting Actors).

Here is a mystery. I was not fond of Miss Hampshire, and I am sure I took this because of the Lady Extra, as I later took 3 more shots of her. A striking face. This little tableau was up-stage of the main action of a scene in Episode 22, which was to my right. I now have to assume that the lady was a friend or relation of someone on the production team.

The unknown Lady Extra still on set. Miss Hampshire had moved off to camera right.

The unidentified lady Extra, having a drink in the Bar. Extras rarely turned up there, which is why I think she was a friend or relative of someone in the Production Team.

Martin Lisemore. Production Assistant/Floor Manager

John Phillips. Actor: “Sir Alexander MacGavin”.

The mark on his cheek/lip is on the original negative. Other damage on the enprint has been fixed digitally.

Richard Pearson. Actor: “Foskisson”

The next three shots were commissioned. I’m not aware that Mr. Luckham ever used them publicly. Maybe for his own scrapbook?

Cyril Luckham. Actor: “Sir Lawrence Mont”

Sarah Lisemore. Extra, and wife of Martin.

Doug Beebe. Cameraman, with EMI 301 Camera ( Studio TC4)

Jean McMillan. Makeup assistant.

Many years later I met her at a party and we talked about The Saga. Bewailed the fact that Eric Porter would do his own makeup (sometimes on set!) which they would then have to modify for TV. She had left the BBC (and Make-up) and then got married. I sent her a copy of this picture. She asked whether I had posed her and especially lit it. No to both; if I had I would not have used Two Keys!

Ann Ferriggi. Make-up Superviser.

We always felt she was protecting her girls from those hairy Tech.Ops people. I also met her much later at a party (a different party) where she told me that she and her husband had been so disgusted at the way a “retirement home” had looked after his Parents, that they set up their own “home”.

George Benson. Actor: “Marquis of Shropshire”. Not a good print.

Deanne Pummery. Make-up Assistant.

One evening, at the after-show booze up, Michael Turner (Junior Cameraman) went down on his knee and proposed to her (with a ring!). And she accepted. At the time I thought it was a put up job, as a way of announcing to the world their private decision. I still think that.

She went on to be a well-regarded Make-up Supervisor, working under her married name; Mike went on (by way of Vision Mixing??) to be a Producer on Blue Peter.

Judy McLennan. Make-up Assistant.

Lennox Phillips. Script Editor

Elizabeth Rhodes. Liz Rhodes was Secretary to Donald Wilson, the Producer
