They cost more but the ink is cheap and lasts a long time. My Epson L355 has been here for a few years now, and I've filled the black a couple of times and the others once.

That might be the least of your problems. Some printer/scanners, including mine, have a feature where if it doesn’t detect a useable print cartridge, the unit is blocked from doing anything at all - even scanning.
