{"id":7673,"date":"2017-11-25T14:09:02","date_gmt":"2017-11-25T14:09:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/?page_id=7673"},"modified":"2017-11-25T14:09:02","modified_gmt":"2017-11-25T14:09:02","slug":"network-feeds","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/network-feeds\/","title":{"rendered":"Network Feeds"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Dave Buckley<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Does anyone know how the network feeds work nowadays, particularly BBC2?<\/p>\n<p>I came in partway through \u201cDad&#8217;s Army\u201d on Saturday night on BBC2 Scotland (via Sky) which was being shown in the correct aspect ratio. I had to switch to BBC2 England to check something and there the picture was wide screen.<\/p>\n<p>Also, I have noticed that BBC2 Scotland seem to opt-in\/out of the network feed before junctions as there is a distinct sound break before and after junctions, but there are no picture disturbances when the sound breaks occur. <\/p>\n<p>Very odd.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Peter Neill<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I can\u2019t comment on the aspect ratio issue but it may be a combination of factors &#8211; <\/p>\n<ul class=\"L1_1\">\n<li>\n<div class=\"Bullet\" style=\"margin-top:auto;\">flag sent by transmitter<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"Bullet\" style=\"margin-top:auto;\">settings on your TV <\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>etc. (\u2018Automatic\u2019 doesn\u2019t always give the required results).<\/p>\n<p>As regards the opting, it is normal practice to opt actually a little early, with the incoming network on the desk so there is more control over the actual junction e.g. a vision or sound mix rather than a cut. The same procedure on the opt back. <\/p>\n<p>This may all change in the future, particularly if regional HD gets the go-ahead. Network will no longer be fed out to the Nations\/Regions. Instead, everything will be fed to a central point, all opting will be done there and the outgoing feeds multiplexed for distribution to satellite channels, DTT etc. The region would have to enable a \u201cready\u201c switch.
