Does anyone know what is the white stuff that comes out of spent batteries these days? Years ago it seemed to rot the contacts but now it seems you can just scrape it off with no harm done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What sort of batteries\/cells? Ni-Cds, perhaps?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just the normal Duracell or Panasonic, not rechargeable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The white stuff was almost certainly caused by caustic potassium hydroxide leaking from alkaline cells. Some potassium carbonate may be present too. The best way to clean up any mess is to use a dilute acid, such as vinegar or lemon juice, which will neutralise the alkali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Removing \u2018white stuff\u2019 – sounds a bit suspicious! I\u2019ve removed the verdigris from my dad\u2019s cheap old Aiwa mic using a mixture of white vinegar and salt. It came off immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
