Herbie was directing a play I worked on in the 1970s. During blocking, the was a minor problem with the set. "Ah," says Herbie in his Austrian accent; "ve need a veg!". The FM looked perplexed – what did he mean? A carrot? A cauliflower? "No no," says Herbie; "a VOODEN veg! You must excuse my little Wiennese vim!" <\/p>\n

I worked on \u201cArturo Ui\u201d and \u201cStoppers Copper\u201d, both exciting films. For \u201cArturo\u2026\u201d, Jack screened the original \u201cScarface\u201d for the crew so we could comprehend the genre and we shot the last monochrome \u201cPlay for Today\u201d on a specially tweaked Arri BL with mono Ilford stock.<\/p>\n
The Valentines Day massacre was exceptional, we had real Thompsons from Baptys and they made a hell of a racket.<\/p>\n
\u201cStoppers Copper\u201d was shot in Cornwall and we had 3 choirs and 3 brass bands in attendance, it was about the china clay strike of 1913 and its brutal repression by the Glamorgan Riot Police in the clay pits. The wrap party was in St Austell cinema and all the locals turned up, we went for a dawn dip in the bay afterwards, great party, great Filming.<\/p>\n
Jack\u2019s son produced World Music CDs , including Ry Cooders \u201cBueno Vista\u201d Cuban series.<\/p>\n

I fondly remember his obvious delight when we walked into the Hilton reception in Vienna for "Sakharov": "Gosh, Pat, I didn’t know it was going to be you!"<\/p>\n
Very flattering.<\/p>\n
Peter Goldring, Bernie Newnham, Barry Bonner<\/strong><\/h3>\nWe did a Noel Coward play called "Sail Away", set on a cruise ship and directed by Jack Gold There was a circular table with a cut out into which Peter and camera were put to get shots of all the people seated around table.<\/p>\n
