button (top right) to close the newly opened picture.)<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/robin_hood_3.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" src=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/robin_hood_3-300x224.png\" alt=\"robin_hood_3\" class=\"wp-image-4098\" style=\"width:670px;height:auto\" srcset=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/robin_hood_3-300x224.png 300w, http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/robin_hood_3.png 801w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also among the cast was Alan Wheatley, former Sheriff of Nottingham in ITV&#8217;s long running series from the 1950\u2019s, \u201cThe Adventures of Robin Hood\u201d, which had the signature tune that anyone who watched it will remember:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Robin Hood, Robin Hood,<br>Riding through the glen,<br>Robin Hood Robin Hood,<br>With his band of men.<br>Feared by the bad,<br>Loved by the good,<br>Robin Hood, Robin Hood, Robin Hood&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Robin Hood signature tune was sung by a small time dance band crooner called Dick James, &nbsp;and backed by the Ron Goodwin orchestra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/robin_hood_4.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/robin_hood_4-300x300.png\" alt=\"robin_hood_4\" class=\"wp-image-4099\" style=\"width:667px;height:auto\" srcset=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/robin_hood_4-300x300.png 300w, http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/robin_hood_4-150x150.png 150w, http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/robin_hood_4.png 810w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The track was recorded impeccably by George Martin for Parlophone, and it is on his \u201cRecorded by George Martin\u201d Box set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The original theme, as sung by Dick James but with some overdubbing, can be found on this site:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turnipnet.com\/whirligig\/index.htm\">http:\/\/www.turnipnet.com\/whirligig\/index.htm<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and going through the menu options <span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cChildren\u2019s TV <span style=\"font-family: Symbol;\">\uf0e8<\/span> Robin Hood <span style=\"font-family: Symbol;\">\uf0e8<\/span> Robin Hood Song\u201d,<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dick James had a house band and a studio in Tin Pan Alley for recording demos. &nbsp;The bass player in the band, Freddy, said that they sacked a piano player called Reg Dwight because he wasn\u2019t good enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dick James\u2019 later claim to fame was as a music publisher. He met Brian Epstein in 1962 and with him formed Northern Songs to publish The Beatles. Martin Kisner worked at EMI Abbey Road Studios in a very junior engineer capacity during the early Beatles era. Dick James was often in Studio 2 whilst the Beatles were recording (<i>note<\/i>: this picture is duplicated elesewhere on the Tech Ops site):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>(Click on the picture below to see a larger or clearer version of this picture:<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Click the &#8220;X&#8221; button (top right) to close the newly opened picture.)<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/robin_hood_5.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"294\" src=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/robin_hood_5-300x294.png\" alt=\"robin_hood_5\" class=\"wp-image-4100\" style=\"width:672px;height:auto\" srcset=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/robin_hood_5-300x294.png 300w, http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/robin_hood_5.png 893w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1967 his Dick James Music signed the unknown Reggie Dwight &#8211; Elton John of course. \u00a0Dick James Music was the label with which Elton started his (and Bernie\u2019s) huge career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pat Heigham<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I had the Dick James 78, back in the late 1950s, and on entering my new school at 13 years, I was made to go through the then current humiliating initiation for new boys &#8211; standing on top of the lockers and singing a song, while everyone threw books at you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I chose \u201cRobin Hood\u201d and there is a spoken recitatif halfway through, which I was faithfully reproducing. This led to a chorus of &#8220;You&#8217;re NOT singing!&#8221; Whereupon I plonked my hands on hips, and told them that was how it was supposed to be, and that if they didn&#8217;t shut up and listen, I was getting down. Oh! yes, I wanted an audience for my performance! (Pity Simon Cowell wasn&#8217;t there &#8211; he would have been 3!) I was never bullied again, and further got my own back by appearing in the school play that year &#8211; it was \u201cJudgement Day\u201d (a departure from Shakespeare). &nbsp;I played a young child testifying in a witness box against his parents in a totalitarian state &#8211; got a good write up in the local paper!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Alan Machin<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Adventures of Robin Hood\u201d was very popular in the US where it was distributed by CBS and the theme song was covered by, among others, Frankie Laine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Geoff Hawkes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I remember Frankie Lane chiefly for &#8220;Champion the Wonder Horse&#8221; &#8211; another series that I used to watch while having tea at my grandma&#8217;s after school. Those were the days&#8230;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pat Heigham<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Frankie Laine had a hit song: &#8220;Mule Train&#8221; with a whip crack effect built in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I remember working on (it might have been) \u201cCrackerjack\u201d, or some LE show in TVT, and one act was a guy who sang \u201cMule Train\u201d, and whacked himself on the head with a tin tray for the whip crack. Very funny, but I heard that he did it once too often and managed to kill himself!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Geoff Hawkes, Mike Giles, Alec Bray<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another name to conjure with was Elton Hayes, whose rendering of &#8220;The Owl and the Pussy Cat\u201d was often requested on Children&#8217;s Favourites, especially when he himself was standing in for Uncle Mac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">See: &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yourepeat.com\/watch\/?v=JLRp37GyMcI\">http:\/\/www.yourepeat.com\/watch\/?v=JLRp37GyMcI<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elton Hayes was in the 1952 Walt Disney film &nbsp;\u201cThe Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men\u201d (starring Richard Todd<span style=\"font-family: Helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">) <\/span><\/span>in which he played Alan-a-Dale, and for which he also composed some of the music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elton Hayes can be seen very briefly at the start of the film &nbsp;\u201cThe Black Knight\u201d &nbsp;(1954, a variation on the King Arthur story produced by Irving Allen and Albert &#8216;Cubby&#8217; Broccoli and starring Alan Ladd) as a minstrel singing a few bars of \u201c<i>The Whistling Gypsy\/The Gypsy Rover\u201d<\/i>.
