{"id":2633,"date":"2014-11-11T11:24:16","date_gmt":"2014-11-11T11:24:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/?page_id=2633"},"modified":"2014-11-11T11:24:16","modified_gmt":"2014-11-11T11:24:16","slug":"greenwood-theatre","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/greenwood-theatre\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenwood Theatre"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Background<\/h2>\n<p>The theatre was built in 1975 in the grounds of Guy&#8217;s hospital near London Bridge station and was &nbsp;largely paid for by a benefactor &#8211; Sir James Mantle Greenwood (1902-1969), chairman of James Greenwood Advertising Ltd. The building was (initially) designed as a lecture theatre.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC moved into the theatre in 1979.&nbsp; The first programme was made there on 23rd September 1979.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Mike Jordan<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The BBC moved in while TV Theatre was being re-furbished.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Peter Neill<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I spent a very long time at the PA desk at the Greenwood. <\/p>\n<p>For a long time the schedule was:<\/p>\n<table width=\"102%\" cellspacing=\"0\">\n<tr style=\"vertical-align:top;\">\n<td width=\"7.92%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"15.7%\">Tuesday <\/td>\n<td width=\"76.4%\"> Russell Harty (the Thursday show came from Manchester)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align:top;\">\n<td><\/td>\n<td>Wednesday <\/td>\n<td> Parkinson (The Saturday show came from TC)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align:top;\">\n<td><\/td>\n<td>Thursday <\/td>\n<td>Question Time<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align:top;\">\n<td><\/td>\n<td>Friday <\/td>\n<td> Friday Night, Saturday Morning.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p>Mondays were often unused, but I remember a series called \u201cPrivate Lives\u201d, a chat show with actress Maria Aitken interviewing her luvvie friends who brought along items of memorabilia.<\/p>\n<p>Other shows included \u201cFace The Music\u201d &#8211; and the first series of \u201cBlackadder\u201c was played to an audience there to record a laugh track.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t an OB set-up although originally the engineers and I think CCUs were in an old scanner parked outside, but over the years more and more became permanently installed.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>John Vincent<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I had the shot of Grace Jones hitting Russell Harty at the Greenwood. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/GWT_1.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/GWT_1-300x192.png\" alt=\"GWT_1\" border=\"0\" width=\"530\" height=\"340\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2630\" srcset=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/GWT_1-300x192.png 300w, http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/GWT_1.png 530w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/GWT_2.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/GWT_2-300x192.png\" alt=\"GWT_2\" border=\"0\" width=\"526\" height=\"338\"  class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2631\" srcset=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/GWT_2-300x192.png 300w, http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/GWT_2.png 526w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 526px) 100vw, 526px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I also remember a certain Producer banning the crew from the Green Room. &nbsp;A separate hospitality area was put on for us plebs. The Turns used to come to ours because the official one was boring!<\/p>\n<p>I also worked on a Roland Rat series there.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Warwick Cross<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a name=\"_MailEndCompose\">\u201cQuestion Time\u201d was definitely there -.. &nbsp;I produced special opening titles for the 100<sup>th<\/sup> edition and they were played out from the Greenwood.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another regular production was \u201cFriday Night . . Saturday Morning\u201d&nbsp; which came out of the Pres Programmes \u201cLate Night Line-Up\u201d stable \u2013 produced by Frances Whittacre.&nbsp; Different presenter every week.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Roger Bunce<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I have very fond memories of the Greenwood Theatre, and the nurses&#8217; swimming pool under Guy&#8217;s Hospital. \u201cQuestion Time\u201d with an ancient spring ped at the back, \u201cFriday Night, Saturday Morning\u201d, \u201cRussell Harty&#8217;\u201d etc. No one has yet mentioned one of the real delights of the Greenwood &#8211; those wonderful Mad-Ladies, who ran the canteen\/tea bar, before BBC Catering took over. They served an all-day &#8216;Breakfast with Chips&#8217;, and pronounced the word &#8216;Pizza&#8217; as it is spelled &#8211; &#8216;Pizzer&#8217;.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Sound Control Room<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/GWT_3.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/GWT_3-300x201.png\" alt=\"GWT_3\" border=\"0\" width=\"545\" height=\"366\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2632\" srcset=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/GWT_3-300x201.png 300w, http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/GWT_3.png 545w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 545px) 100vw, 545px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Bernie Newham<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I directed a series called \u201cStar Memories\u201d there. It was immediately after the &quot;only two showings&quot; rule went away &#8211; handbagged by Margaret Thatcher I think. We had famous people &#8211; Michael Parkinson, Lenny Henry, Fulton Mackay, Su Pollard and others&nbsp; &#8211; asking for clips that had been locked away for ever.&nbsp;&nbsp; Common enough stuff these days, \u2026 but very much a first then.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Ian Norman<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I worked on several shows at Greenwood.\u201cChoices\u201d (1982 series with Libby Purves)\u201cQuestion Time\u201d\u201cFriday night, Saturday morning\u201d\u201cParkinson\u201d (I have this on video).I can&#8217;t remember anything about the following ones, but they&#8217;re in my diary.\u201cG.L.C.
