Postscript<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n The series took its title from the proverb “Softly, softly, catchee monkey”, which was the motto of Lancashire Constabulary Training School. The original brief on the inauguration of the Regional Crime Squads is: ‘To investigate the criminal and not the crime.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n \u201cSoftly, Softly\u201d suffered from the BBC’s lack of a proper archiving policy until 1978. Many episodes of the first two series were live (although film recorded for overseas sales): other episodes and all the the later series were recorded on Videotape, and it was BBC policy before 1978 to wipe master tapes and reuse them for other programmes, hence saving money and storage space. Eighty-six episodes are thought to no longer exist, and only five episodes are known to exist – although some might<\/em><\/strong> still exist as film recordings stored in overseas archive vaults.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

David Brunt has provided a chronology of the first two series of \u201cSoftly, Softly\u201d based on the BBC\u2019s daily programme broadcast logs, which are very comprehensive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

* Episode 9 was pre-recorded \u2013 and out-of-sequence – as otherwise rehearsals would take place all over Christmas for a live transmission on 28th<\/sup> December. Episodes 8 and 10 were both live. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Series 3 onwards<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\n From Series 3 onwards the episodes were pre-recorded onto quad 2\u201d tape. The Telerecording was started at exactly the same time that a previous week’s recording was being transmitted, and it was recorded \u201cas live\u201d \u2013 the programme episode would continue straight through no matter what happened, and if the producer and director were happy, and the recording was OK, that was it. Sometimes, as with the live episodes, there would be re-takes for BBC Enterprises – sale abroad -but this would be an edit on the quad 2\u201d tape, and it may be BBC Enterprises would pay to cut-edit the tape, although usually at this time it was a charge against the programme.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Series 5 Episode 4 \u201cError of Judgment\u201d was shot completely on film. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Real Crew 7 <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\n This account of going live with \u201cSoftly, Softly\u201d does not name the crew members, since there was no possible way of tying up the various graphics with the real people. Crew 7 really did exist, and these are the crew members at the time. Although please bear in mind that there were often changes within the crews, as members were sent on other assignments or for training.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
