{"id":10289,"date":"2020-04-01T08:02:20","date_gmt":"2020-04-01T08:02:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/?page_id=10289"},"modified":"2024-04-01T11:24:16","modified_gmt":"2024-04-01T11:24:16","slug":"connections","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/connections\/","title":{"rendered":"Connections"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Johnny Todd he took a notion \n<br>For to sail the ocean wide, \n<br>And he left his true love behind him,\n<br>Weeping by the Liverpool tide.<br>Perhaps you don\u2019t recognise the words. &nbsp;But I\u2019m sure that you recognise this:\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Z-Cars_Titles.mp4\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"231\" height=\"37\" src=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/play_video.png\" alt=\"play_video\" class=\"wp-image-10242\"  style=\"width:auto;height:25px\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The song includes this verse, too:\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Johnny Todd came back from sailing,<br>Sailing o&#8217;er the ocean wide,\n<br>But he found that his fair and false one\n<br>Was another sailor&#8217;s bride.<br>This is taken from the 1891 collection of traditional tunes by Frank Kidson. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now,\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thomas Hood (23 May 1799 \u2013 3 May 1845) was an English poet, author and humorist.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"279\" height=\"402\" src=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/connex_1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10430\" srcset=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/connex_1.png 279w, http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/connex_1-208x300.png 208w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 279px) 100vw, 279px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<br>Thomas Hood was famous for his puns. \n\n<br><br>One of his poems is about Ben, a carpenter, and Sally Brown:\n<br><br>\n<p style=\"margin-left:36pt;margin-top:auto;\">&#8230;\n<br><br>But as they fetched a walk one day,\n<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;They met a press-gang crew;\n<br>And Sally she did faint away,\n<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;Whilst Ben he was brought to.  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<i>(18th C slang)<\/i>\n\n<br><br>The boatswain swore with wicked words\n<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;Enough to shock a saint,\n<br>That, though she did seem in a fit,\n<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;\u2019T was nothing but a feint.  &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <i>(geddit?)<\/i>\n\n<br><br>\u201cCome, girl,\u201d said he, \u201chold up your head.\n<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;He \u2019ll be as good as me;\n<br>For when your swain is in our boat\n<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;A boatswain he will be.\n\n<br><br>&#8230;\n\n<br><br>\u201cAnd is he gone, and is he gone?\u201d\n<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;She cried and wept outright;\n<br>\u201cThen I will to the water-side,\n<br>&nbsp; &nbsp;And see him out of sight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<br>A somewhat different start to \u201cJohnny Todd\u201d perhaps, but the end result is the same:\n<br><br>\n<br><p style=\"margin-left:36pt;margin-top:auto;\">Now Ben had sailed to many a place\n<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;That \u2019s underneath the world;\n<br>But in two years the ship came home,\n<br>&nbsp; &nbsp;And all her sails were furled.\n\n<br><br>But when he called on Sally Brown,\n<br>&nbsp; &nbsp;To see how she got on,\n<br>He found she\u2019d got another Ben,\n<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;Whose Christian-name was John.\n\n<br><br>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n<br><br>The 2017 Disorganised Christmas Lunch was held at The George, Wanstead (although at the time of the Disorganised, it was snowing\u2026. <br><br>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"446\" height=\"276\" src=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/connex_2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10436\" srcset=\"http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/connex_2.png 446w, http:\/\/tech-ops.co.uk\/next\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/connex_2-300x186.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 446px) 100vw, 446px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\nThere has been a pub on the site of \u201cThe George\u201d site for hundreds of years. Set in to the side of the pub is a plaque dating from 1752 which was formerly part of an older pub building. The plaque is inscribed with the eccentrically spelled verse:\n<br><br>\n<p style=\"margin-left:72pt;margin-top:auto;\">In Memory of\n<br>Ye Cherry Pey\n<br>As cost 1\/2 a Guiney\n<br>Ye 17 of July\n<br>That day we had good cheer\n<br>I hope to so do maney a Year\n<br>R C 1752 D Jerry<\/p>\n\n<br><br>There are various local legends explaining this curious plaque, including a tale of the theft of a cherry pie by local workmen who were caught and fined half a guinea (52.5p).
